MPA Coach Selected for State Basketball Hall of Fame

January 09, 2023

After earning his 500th career win and an eighth regional championship last season, Morgan Park Academy varsity girls basketball coach Tom Drahozal has been selected by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association for induction into the state basketball hall of fame next spring.

Drahozal has built the MPA girls program into one of the most successful in IHSA Class 1A, posting a 400-287 (.582) record across 28 seasons.

He previously won 106 games in seven seasons as varsity boys coach.

The MPA girls are 5-0 this season after defeating conference rival Francis W. Parker School on Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, for Drahozal’s 400th win. They swept Christ the King, Illinois Lutheran, and St. Francis de Sales to win their annual Thanksgiving tournament, led by tournament MVP Sheridan Harris, their All-State senior forward.

Founded in 1973, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame honors the best and most influential players, teams, coaches, media, officials, and friends of basketball in Illinois history. Learn more at ibcaillinois.org and basketballmuseumofillinois.com.

Drahozal joined the Morgan Park Academy faculty in 1987 as a social studies teacher and has been Upper School principal since 2010.

He was an assistant coach and eventually a head coach for successful varsity boys basketball teams before taking over the varsity girls program in 1994.

Drahozal also won more than 200 games and an armful of accolades in three decades leading the MPA baseball program.
