The Lake Forest Academy annual FIRE (Fostering Intercultural Respect and Engagement) Conference provides a platform for students and teachers to dialogue with peers, recognize the value of a conflict, and work toward an equitable middle ground through the virtues of intentional listening and empathy. We acknowledge that conflict arises because of our differences and deeply held ways of knowing and being. Learning to form independent judgments requires an openness to the challenges one’s ideas may elicit and a willingness to question one’s views in light of new knowledge, evidence, and perspectives.
